2016 Art Wall Calendar Pre-order

This calendar features all my most popular pieces of artwork. They will be spiral bound and each page measures 8.5 x 11 inches and 11 x 17 inches when the calendar is opened. Save the images after the year is over and frame them.

I expect them to arrive and ship out the first week of December. All pre-orders will receive free shipping in the U.S. They will ship out comfortably in padded envelopes. Please let me know if you need rush shipping for Hanukkah.

Day Eighteen - Qi-yo Ke-pe Study II

While crossing the second river Qu-yo Ke-pe removed her other moccasin and out flew Eagles, ravens, crows, owls, and hawks.

Day Seventeen - Pythia Study

This little charcoal study is of Pythia, the oracle at Delphi. I was going for mystic/mysterious but she's kinda creeping me out.

Day Sixteen Qi-yo Ke-pe Study

Over the Summer I read a book about Native American Stories and this is from one of them.  When crossing a river, Qi-yo Ke-pe removes and shakes her moccasin.  Out springs buffalo, deer, and antelopes all which had not existed before then.  When she shakes out her other moccasin birds fly out, perhaps another piece on the to-do list.

Day Fifteen - Ada Lovelace Study II

Its bigger, its better, its green.  It also took forever.

Day Fourteen - Knossos

Another ancient city I keep visiting is the Minoian city of Knossos. I've still got a couple little touch up spots to do once it dries tomorrow but besides that this one is done.

Day Eleven - Molly Pitcher

The nickname Molly Pitcher was given to many women during the revolutionary war.  Mary Ludwig Hay McCauley was one of the women given the nickname of Molly Pitcher.  Her job was to assist her husband by prepping the cannon between rounds.  After he died in battle, she took over firing the cannon herself.  At one point in the battle, British cannon fire went right through her skirt without damaging her.  She made some comment along the lines of, at least it didn't hit anything important, and kept on firing.

Day Ten - Pompeii Amphitheater Study

This is a little study I did of the amphitheater in Pompeii.  Are being covered in many feet of ash from Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, the amphitheater was one of the only structures still visible. This building was where gladiatorial games took place like in the Roman Colosseum.

Day Nine - Zac Kuk Study

Zac Kuk was a Mayan ruler who ruled for her son, Pacal the Great, until he came of age. She still had a lot of influence after her son took over the throne.

Day Seven - Victoria Woodhull Study

Victoria Woodhull was many things; she owned a newspaper, she and her sister were the first women to become stockbrokers, she and her sister even spent their youth making a living as sprit mediums. What Victoria is most known for is being the first woman to run for president of the United States. This was years before women won the right to vote which she is also known for helping with.

Day Five - Eliza Lucas Pinckney

Today's piece is a quick study for Eliza Lucas Pinckney who helped boost Indigo production in the American colonies.  After a few failed attempts she got the plant to grow in South Carolina.  

Day Six - Sophie Blanchard Study

Sophie Blanchard was one of the worlds first female aviators.  She was described as was small, quiet, and nervous.  Noises like the busy street and the carriage rides bothered her, perhaps this is they she liked ballooning so much.  Sophie Blanchard and her husband were famous for their showy ballooning events.  Very often they performed stunts such as lighting fireworks from the balloon. This was very dangerous since the gas they used to inflate the balloon was flammable.  In fact, she died after her balloon caught fire and crashed.  For a great podcast about her, click here.

Day Threee: Pompeii III

Pompeii was buried when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.  As a classical studies minor, I spent an awful lot of time learning about it.  I always loved the diagrams in my textbooks.

Technically I have been working on this piece since September, but today it is finally done! For this piece I put down a layer of watercolor, masked off sections, and then many many layers of powdered charcoal that I spayed with watered down matte medium.  This process took a long time since it is charcoal, I can't speed up the process with a hair dyer, it would just blow away. Below are are few in progress pictures.

Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer. Because of a divorce with her father Lord Byron, Ada's mother pushed her into learning about anything but poetry. She excelled in math. I have been meaning to do a piece on her for a while now. This piece is made up of the math formula used which I will no way attempt to understand.  For a great podcast on Ada Lovelace click here.

Gertrude Ederle was the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926. During her famous swim the water became very rough and her coach yelled at her to get out of the water.  She replied, "What for?"  Not only was she the first woman to swim across the English Channel, she also set the world record at the time for doing so beating the previous time by about two hours.  People at that time thought no woman would ever be able to swim across the English Channel, only five men has been able to do so before her.   She was welcomed home with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.

Since swimming goggles had not yet been invented, she crated her own out of motorcycle goggles and sealed it with paraffin wax to make them water tight. They are now on display in a museum. She was also mostly deaf.

50/50 Challange

I've decided to challenge myself by doing 50 pieces of artwork in 50 days.  Starting on November 1st and ending on December 20th, I will post a new piece of artwork here on my blog and on my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.  Each piece will be available for purchase in my Etsy shop as well as on my website.  I will send out  updates through my newsletter periodically (I'm thinking every 10 days) but to get the first look at my pieces daily you will need to follow me here on my blog or social media.

Some pieces will be small framed works, and others may be large oil paintings.  The majority of pieces will continue with my current work on women throughout history but I've also go a few other pieces planned. With each piece I will include some fun information such as what inspired me to do the piece, techniques I used, or what the process was.
